UPDATE - Nigeria: Man Trekking From Lagos to Abuja Over Buhari Victory

Minna — Soldiers dispersed Bida residents who trooped to catch a glimpse of 33 year old Suleman Hashimu on a solo trek from Lagos to Abuja after vowing to do so if retired General Muhammadu Buhari wins the presidential elections.

Hashimu, who left Lagos 13 days earlier, en route Abuja, arrived Bida, Niger State, Monday to a rosy reception.

He told Daily Trust yesterday in Bida that he had arrived amid fanfare and was received by the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar and hundreds of locals.

"Soldiers had to be invited to disperse the crowd that trooped into the hotel where I am staying, thereby obstructing traffic," he said.

Hasheem, an indigene of Katsina State who works with a construction company in Ibadan, Oyo State, said it was a promise he made two years ago and must be fulfilled.

"I made the promise for such a mission to show my love for the leader of the masses, General Muhammadu Buhari and for the 13 day journey I have embarked upon so far, I have used up five pairs of canvass," he said.

According to him, before embarking on the mission, he made adequate financial provision but since the journey began he had not spent anything because in every town or village he arrived along the way, he was well received.
