For some, it was justice. For others, it was long overdue.
But for the family of Freddie Gray, it was the first sign his suspected killers
might not walk away free. Baltimore authorities, in a swift and sudden show of legal
might, charged six police officers Friday in connection with the death of the
25-year-old black man arrested without cause last month.
“These charges are an important step in getting justice for
Freddie,” said Richard Shipley, the victim’s stepfather.
“Without justice, there is no peace,” Shipley continued.
“But let us have peace in the pursuit of justice.”
Gray’s mother applauded the arrests.
“I feel good because we got all six of them,” Gloria Darden
told BuzzFeed News.
“You can rest, Freddie. You can rest. You can be in peace
now,” Darden said.
The half-dozen cops, three of them black and one with a
history of mental health issues, repeatedly ignored Gray’s requests for medical
attention after his April 12 arrest, authorities said.
